Shaping the Future of Healthcare with AI: Insights from AI2MED’s Research

The AI2MED project is taking significant strides in preparing healthcare professionals to effectively integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into medical practice. As part of this mission, our team recently finalised two key research deliverables that will lay the foundation for developing cutting-edge educational curricula and MOOCs for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and Vocational Education and Training (VET).

Key Research Findings

Our research, conducted across seven European countries, identified critical gaps in AI-related skills in healthcare. From this analysis, we have developed actionable outcomes that will guide future educational efforts. Some highlights include:

  • A structured skills matrix that maps the competencies necessary for AI adoption, including data analysis, ethical AI application, and collaborative practices, providing a clear framework to address identified skill gaps.
  • Insights into regional disparities in digital readiness, emphasizing the need for tailored, context-specific strategies.

From Research to Action

These findings have been pivotal in shaping our next steps:

  1. Curriculum Development:
    • For HEIs, we’re designing comprehensive programmes that emphasize critical thinking, data management, communication between AI experts and healthcare professionals and ethical AI use, preparing future leaders in healthcare.
    • VET curricula will focus on practical AI literacy, offering hands-on workshops and real-world case studies for healthcare support staff.
  2. Creation of MOOCs:
    • Leveraging the latest findings, we will develop 5 MOOCs aimed at democratising access to AI education and making it available to future healthcare professionals across Europe.

The Road Ahead

With a focus on interdisciplinary collaboration, ethical compliance, and practical training, AI2MED is committed to revolutionizing healthcare education. Stay tuned for updates as we transition from research to implementation, paving the way for a workforce ready to harness the transformative potential of AI.
