Gina is an AI-powered virtual assistant on WhatsApp designed to improve women’s gynecological health literacy. Developed by Woom.AI with Infobip’s technology and a team of medical experts, Gina provides reliable, understandable information on gynecological and reproductive health topics via friendly chat. According to the Croatian Institute of Public Health (HZJZ), Gina uses artificial intelligence to inform and educate women of all ages about menstrual health, contraception, pregnancy, menopause and related subjects through an interactive, text-based interface.
Gina was publicly launched on World Sexual Health Day 2025 as part of a global trend toward digital health assistants. At a panel event, project lead Tom Gavazzi (Woom.AI) explained that Gina was built to provide reliable, understandable and accessible information about gynecological health via a simulated, virtual healthcare specialist on WhatsApp. The goal is to complement Croatia’s healthcare system by leveraging AI; Gina is envisioned as a trusted extension of the doctor’s advice, not a replacement for medical care. In fact, health experts involved in the project emphasize that Gina always reminds users to keep regular doctor appointments. When Gina answers a woman’s question, it often adds a brief note that visiting a physician remains essential, thus preserving the vital patient–doctor relationship.
Gina’s knowledge base was written by a multidisciplinary team (gynecologists, epidemiologists, school doctors, biologists, psychologists, etc.), and it will be continuously updated. Gina can explain Pap smears and cervical cancer screening, advise on contraception and sexual health, clarify menstrual and menopausal issues, and answer questions about fertility, pregnancy or postpartum care. In other words, Gina empowers users to make informed decisions about their health with evidence-based answers. She also supports partners and family members (fathers, brothers, husbands, friends) by providing them with trustworthy information so they can better support the women in their lives.
Accessing Gina is simple: users scan the on-screen QR code or click a link to add Gina-AI in their WhatsApp contacts. Then they just type messages as they would in any chat. The AI generates instant replies using its expert-curated database, often including clickable links for further reading. By World Health Organization standards, Gina counts as an on-demand digital health intervention, essentially an interactive chat-based information tool.
In practice, the steps to use Gina are straightforward:
- Scan the Gina QR code or follow the access link to add Gina in WhatsApp.
- Send any question about women’s health (e.g. “What is a normal menstrual cycle?” or “How often should I get a Pap test?”).
- Receive an instant AI-generated response with reliable information and links for deeper learning.
Gina is supported by Croatia’s top health organizations, including the Ministry of Health, the HZJZ, the City Public Health Institute “Dr. Andrija Štampar”, various medical societies (school medicine, epidemiology, oncology, etc.), the Croatian Cancer League, the “Sve za nju” women’s association, Poliklinika Analiza, Health Hub and more. HZJZ assistant director Tomislav Benjak noted that projects like Gina show Croatia “uses modern digital technologies in healthcare, including artificial intelligence” and represent a new wave of public health outreach. In support of this vision, Gina is considered an important contribution to women’s empowerment and preventive health: healthier, informed women lead to stronger families and communities.
Looking ahead, the team plans to expand Gina’s reach. Project leaders announced an English version in the works, intending to offer Gina to other European countries. Currently, Croatian women (and men interested in women’s health) can rely on Gina as a confidential and friendly helper, bridging them to the healthcare system and providing the knowledge they need to make informed health choices.
