AI2MED finalises curricula for training future AI specialists in the healthcare sector

The AI2MED project has reached an important milestone with the finalisation of comprehensive curricula for both Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and Vocational Education and Training (VET). These newly developed curricula aim to equip future professionals with the necessary skills to effectively deploy and use artificial intelligence in healthcare.

An integrated approach to AI education in healthcare

The curricula address the needs of future doctors, healthcare managers, technicians and IT specialists who support medical processes. By integrating technological, clinical, and ethical considerations, the programmes offer a truly interdisciplinary approach to AI education.

Curricula for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs)

The HEI curricula are designed for medical students, researchers and healthcare data management professionals and focus on four key areas:

  • Data Management and Cybersecurity – This module addresses the storage, processing and protection of patient data in compliance with regulations such as the GDPR. It also provides training on the secure integration of IT systems in medical facilities.
  • Advanced Digital Competencies – This module looks at data visualisation, machine learning and predictive analytics and provides foundational knowledge on the impact of AI on clinical decision- making.
  • Interpersonal and Cross-Disciplinary Communication – This module improves collaboration between healthcare professionals, IT experts and AI developers. It also teaches oversight principles to ensure ethical and effective integration of AI into medical environments.
  • AI Ethics and Oversight – This module examines the ethical use of AI in healthcare, taking into account the OECD guidelines on fairness, transparency and accountability. Using real-world simulations, participants will be able to practise ethical decision-making in clinical scenarios.

Vocational Education and Training (VET) curriculum

The VET curriculum focuses on the practical application of AI in the medical field. This training is tailored to technical and administrative staff and ensures that healthcare professionals are able to effectively support AI systems in their daily work.

Next steps

The finalisation of these curricula marks a key phase in the AI2MED project. In the coming months, the programmes will be used to develop online courses (MOOCs) to make AI in healthcare accessible to a wide audience. The aim of the project is not only to train future professionals, but also to prepare the healthcare sector for the integration of advanced technologies into daily medical practise.
